Insomnia linked to premature death in men
Researchers from Penn State College of Medicine in Pennsylvania say that men who sleep at short times have four times greater risk of premature death compared to men who sleep regular hours.
The research also said that women can cope up with lack of sleep far better than men do.
The research indicated that insomnia does have an effect on a person’s life expectancy, particularly for men who suffer from the sleep disorder.
Aside from early death, the study also showed that the people who do not get enough sleep are prone to other health problems.
“The primary finding of our study is that insomnia, the most common sleep disorder, is associated with significant mortality in men,” said Dr. Alexandros N. Vgontzas, the lead researcher and director of Penn State University’s Sleep Research & Treatment Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Vgontzas continued, “Until now, no study has demonstrated that insomnia is associated with mortality.”
The study was based on the sleep patterns of 1,000 men and 741 men.
